Georgia Personal income tax
Georgia collects income taxes from its residents at the following rates.

For single taxpayers:
-- 1% on the first $750 of taxable income
-- 2% on taxable income between $751 and $2,250
-- 3% on taxable income between $2,251 and $3,750
-- 4% on taxable income between $3,751 and $5,250
-- 5% on taxable income between $5,251 and $7,000

For married persons filing joint returns and heads of households, the rates remain the same but the income brackets cover earnings from $1,000 (at 1 percent) to $10,000 (at 6 percent).
Georgia tax returns are due on April 15, or the next business day if that date falls on a weekend or holiday. For the 2007 filing season, the deadline for federal returns was changed to Tuesday, April 17. Georgia Department of Revenue is following the federal lead and also giving its taxpayers an extra filing day to complete their state returns.
Taxpayers age 62 or older or those permanently and totally disabled may exclude up to $25,000 of retirement income. In 2007, the excludable amount increases to $30,000 and is $35,000 for tax years 2008 and beyond.
A tax credit is allowed to Georgia residents for income taxes paid to other states, but not to foreign countries.
Some Georgia residents whose federal adjusted gross income is no more than $19,999 might be eligible for a low-income tax credit.

Union County Georgia has the third lowest tax millage in Georgia in 2007. It is low because of new home growth in the tax digest. Assessed valuation in Georgia is 40% of real property value, and industrial property is taxed at the same rate as commercial and residential. Thus, the effective tax millage is 40% of the mills levied. Millage is expressed as dollars of tax per $1,000 of assessed value. Funds collected in 2006 by Union County ad-valorum taxes were divided as follows: Schools - 60%, Union County Government (all departments) - 38%, State of Georgia - 2%.

For a site located within one of the tax districts of Union County, the combined 2006 ad valorum property tax rates were as follows:

PER $1,000 OF ASSESSED VALUE.  (Assessed value is 40% of actual value.) OUTSIDE CITY INSIDE CITY
State of Georgia $0.25 $0.25
